Rabin Mondal (1929–2019)

Modern expressionist

Rabin Mondal (1929–2019), born as Rabindra Nath Mondal in Howrah, West Bengal, was one of the pioneers of modern Indian art. Growing up in industrial Howrah, he witnessed poverty, the Bengal Famine of 1943, communal violence, and the hardships of ordinary people. These experiences profoundly shaped the emotional and social themes in his paintings

Although he earned a degree in Commerce from the University of Calcutta, Mondal pursued art through the Indian College of Art and Draughtsmanship and the Asutosh Museum of Indian Art. In 1964, he became a founding member of the Calcutta Painters, a group that helped establish modernist art in eastern India.

For decades he worked quietly in Kolkata, gaining wider national recognition after major retrospective exhibitions in 2005. His paintings are now part of prestigious collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi), the Birla Academy of Art & Culture (Kolkata), and several important private collections in India and abroad.
