Ganesh Pyne (1937–2013) was a master of Indian modernism, celebrated for his haunting, poetic surrealism. Raised in Kolkata, Pyne’s unique aesthetic grew out of a mix of childhood folk tales and the haunting memory of the 1946 riots. Renowned for his meticulous tempera technique, Pyne used a luminous play of shadow and light to explore themes of death, solitude, and mythology. Operating outside popular art trends and commercial fanfare, his quiet, deeply emotive canvases stand among the most compelling works of 20th-century Indian art.
